NAPLES, Italy – Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples kicked off its earthquake and volcanic activity awareness campaign to increase awareness and educate the local NSA Naples community about what to do in the event of an earthquake or volcanic eruption. The campaign is also designed to align our American community with local Italian emergency management plans.
“We work very closely with our Italian counterparts at Protezione Civile to make sure we are in sync with the information they distribute to the surrounding community. One of the command’s goals is to enhance the quality of life for members and that means staying prepared and knowing what to do when an emergency happens,” said Capt. Randazzo
The campaign will feature safety briefs from the NSA Naples Emergency Management department, increased social media presence regarding emergency preparedness, and a more holistic look at where personnel reside within the Campania region. The initial phase of the campaign includes a survey, released through NSA Naples official Facebook page, which invites the NSA Naples community to take and gauge their current knowledge level about emergency preparedness, what to do in the event of an earthquake, where to find resources, and what the local Naples community emergency plan is.
“Living in the shadow of Mt. Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei, emergency management and preparedness is always something we need to keep talking about and improving,” said NSA Naples Commanding Officer Capt. John Randazzo. “I want our community to be knowledgeable about what to do if we experience more earthquakes and what to expect as they work, live and travel around the Naples area.”
As the awareness campaign unfolds in the coming weeks, the community can expect to hear more about Campi Flegrei, how to build an emergency preparedness kit, what to know about the zone you live in, and how to make an emergency preparedness plan. Many of these resources are also hosted on NSA Naples Emergency Management webpage and on Facebook where community members can go to educate themselves at their own pace.
The awareness campaign was developed after a series of earthquakes the Naples region experienced over the summer, with the strongest, a 4.2, happening in September. Since then, base leadership has maintained constant communication with local and national organizations monitoring Campi Flegrei.
“We want to be transparent every step of the way,” said Capt. Randazzo.
Since 2012, the volcanic area encompassing Campi Flegrei and the surrounding area have been in a Yellow (Attention) phase as designated by The Dipartimento della Protezione Civile. This phase indicates a low possibility of eruption and daily monitoring by Italian officials to track any changes in the volcanic area.
