Welcome to Naval Station Rota, Spain - the Gateway to the Mediterranean

Installation Information

NAVSTA Rota plays a crucial role in supporting our nation’s objectives and defense, providing unmatched logistical support and strategic presence to all of our military services and allies. NAVSTA Rota supports Naval Forces Europe Africa Central (EURAFCENT), 6th Fleet and Combatant Commander strategic priorities by providing airfield and port facilities, security, force protection, logistical support, administrative support and emergency services to all U.S. and NATO forces.

Situated on a 6,100-acre Spanish Navy base, NAVSTA Rota provides cargo, fuel and logistics support to units transiting the region, supporting U.S. and NATO ships with three active piers; U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force aircraft with a 670-acre airfield; and the largest weapons and fuels facilities in Europe, all located within a single, secure fence-line. Under the guidance of the Agreement on Defense Cooperation (ADC), the U.S. and Spanish navies work together and share many facilities.

The Kingdom of Spain is a very important ally to the United States for projecting military power into the Mediterranean, North Africa, and Middle East. We have significant shared security interests, and Spain has traditionally supported U.S. forces deployments and operations with U.S. forces departing Spain directly into international air and sea space.

The vision of NAVSTA Rota is to continue to excel as an enduring, strategically-located naval installation, providing operational and logistical support to all tenant commands and transiting warfighters.

    NAVAL STATION ROTA, Spain – U.S. Naval Station Rota conducted the official arrival of the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79), October 16, 2024. Oscar Austin is the first in a plan to homeport two additional destroyers in Naval Station (NAVSTA) Rota.

    Hanging with the Abuelos: Rota Sailors Participate in Alzheimer’s Association COMREL

    Sitting amongst an animated group of abuelos, Spanish for grandparents, are Sailors from Navy Medical Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) Rota. The Sailors are here for a weekly community relations (COMREL) event at La Asociación de Familiares de Enfermos de Alzheimer y otras Demencias «El Arenal de Rota» (AFA EL ARENAL DE ROTA) in Rota, Spain. While they may speak different languages, they have found commonality in laughter, smiles, and shared activities. “It's a mutual enthusiasm to see our friends each week,” said Lt. Ryan Twaddle, a general dentist at NMRTC Rota. “The abuelos know we come on Tuesdays, and we look forward to talking about our weekends, upcoming fiestas, past vacations or time spent with family.” Twaddle and Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Rocio Jimenez Lopez, assigned to dental/prosthodontics department, wanted to incorporate an ongoing service opportunity for NMRTC Sailors within the local community.

    The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Paul Ignatius (DDG 117) returned to Rota, Spain, on November 28, 2023, following a six-month deployment throughout the U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa (NAVEUR-NAVAF) and U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations and marking the completion of its second Forward-Deployed Naval Forces-Europe (FDNF-E) patrol.

    The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) departed Naval Station Rota, Spain November 22, 2023 to begin its 4th patrol in the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations. Arleigh Burke is one of four Forward-Deployed Naval Forces-Europe (FDNF-E) destroyers assigned to Commander Task Force 65 as part of the U.S. Navy’s support to NATO’s Integrated Air Missile Defense (IAMD) architecture. These FDNF-E ships demonstrates the U.S. Navy’s flexibility to operate throughout Europe and Africa, from the Cape of Good Hope to the Arctic Circle, supporting security and stability in the maritime domain.
