A native of Ohio, CAPT Bartak enlisted in 1993. He was a Deck Seaman and Operations Specialist aboard USS Detroit (AOE 4) and selected for the Seaman-to-Admiral Program. CAPT Bartak was commissioned in May of 1998 from Officer Candidate School. He earned a B.S. in Sociology from Excelsior College and a M.A. in National Security Affairs (Eastern Europe) from The Naval Post Graduate School.
CAPT Bartak has deployed to the Middle East, Eastern and Western Asia, South America, South Africa, Europe and Northern Europe, and The Baltic. He served in units supporting Operations Provide Promise, Sharp Guard, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Active Endeavor.
At sea his assignments include Combat Information Center Officer and Electrical Officer on USS Crommelin (FFG 37), Air Warfare Officer on USS San Jacinto (CG 56), Operations Officer aboard USS Bulkeley (DDG 84) with the Bulkeley earning the Arizona Memorial Trophy, Combat Systems Officer and Operations Officer with Destroyer Squadron Twenty Two, Tomahawk Land Attack Missile Officer in Carrier Strike Group Twelve / Enterprise Carrier Strike Group and Executive Officer aboard USS Samuel B Roberts (FFG 58). He recently served as Chief Staff Officer for Amphibious Squadron Eight.
Ashore, CAPT Bartak served in the Readiness Reporting Directorate at U.S. Fleet Forces Command and returned as Executive Assistant for the Shore and Environmental Readiness Directorate. He served as Commanding Officer of Afloat Training Group Pacific Northwest from January 2017 – December 2018.
CAPT Bartak holds various decorations and awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards). He has served in Afloat Units earning five Navy “Battle E” awards and various unit and campaign awards.
