LCDR Charles Ison is a native of Chisholm, Minnesota. He enlisted in the Navy in 2002 as a Mess Specialist and served onboard USS Alexandria (SSN 757) from February 2003 to November 2005. LCDR Ison deployed to Asadabad, Afghanistan with the Provincial Reconstruction Team in support of Operation: Enduring Freedom from April 2006 to May 2007. He graduated from Florida State University May 2011 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology and commissioned via Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. LCDR Ison earned a Masters in Forensic Science from Saint Leo University in April 2018.
Duty assignments included, as the Communications Officer and CMS Custodian aboard USS Mahan (DDG 72) where he earned his SWO qualification and deployed to U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR). LCDR Ison reported onboard USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) as the Anti-Terrorism Officer. During his tour, he deployed to the U.S. 6th Fleet AOR. Department head tours, he served as the Combat Systems Officer and Operations Officer, on USS Montgomery (LCS 8) and USS Omaha (LCS 12), where he lead both ships through a dry-dock maintenance phase from November 2020 to November 2023.
Ashore, LCDR Charles Ison was an Assistant Professor of Naval Science at the Virginia Military Institute. He was the Senior Naval Instructor, and taught Naval History and Weapon Systems for three years before departing for department head school in Newport, Rhode Island.
Achievements and awards include, Surface Warfare Officer Insignia, Enlisted Submarine Warfare Insignia, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal (2).
