Captain Odin J. Klug

A native of Vienna, Virginia, Captain Odin Klug is a U.S. Naval Academy Foundation scholarship recipient and a 1996 U.S. Naval Academy graduate.

Operationally, Odin served as Electrical Officer and Engineering Training Assistant in USS ARLEIGH BURKE (DDG 51). There he earned his surface warfare designation, qualified Engineering Officer of the Watch, and deployed to USCENTCOM and USEUCOM Areas of Operation to support Operation DESERT THUNDER. Next, Odin reported to USS FIREBOLT (PC 10) as Executive Officer, Operations Officer, Navigator, and Administrative Officer, and deployed to USSOUTHCOM in support of numerous counter-narcotics and counter-transnational organized crime operations. He was selected for lateral transfer to naval aviation and earned his wings in 2003. Following helicopter training in the SH-60F and HH-60H, Odin deployed with Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron ELEVEN (HS 11) and HS 5 to multiple Fleets supporting Operations IRAQI FREEDOM, ENDURING FREEDOM, and other contingencies. He commanded Cooperative Security Location (CSL) Comalapa, El Salvador, which supported aerial counter-narcotics and counter-transnational organized crime operations for USSOUTHCOM, including the first long-term deployment of the Department of Homeland Security’s Unmanned Aerial System Guardian.

Ashore, Odin was temporarily assigned to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Navy
Operations Group (code-named “DEEP BLUE”), to counter asymmetric/WMD threats in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. He served in the U.S. Department of State headquarters in Washington, DC as an arms control policy advisor of ballistic missile technology, then chemical, biological, and toxin warfare. Following command, Odin served in the Joint Staff, Deputy Directorate for Global Operations (J-39) as an Action Officer in Cyberspace Operations Policy Branch, the Cyberspace Operations Branch Chief, and as the J-3 liaison to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s New Administration Transition Team (CNATT) in support of the 2016 Presidential transition. He then served as the Test & Evaluation Action Officer and Lead for Air, Land, and Expeditionary Warfares/Fixed & Rotary Wing/UAS platforms and Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director, Innovation, Technology Requirements, Test & Evaluation (OPNAV N94B). Most recently, Odin served as the Deputy Director for Support and Technologies, Joint Information Operations Warfare
Center, overseeing the Center’s change of station from San Antonio, Texas to the National Capital Region.

He earned Masters degrees from both the National Defense University’s Eisenhower School and the Naval Postgraduate School, is a graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College and a Joint Qualified Officer. He received numerous awards, decorations, and citations, including the El Salvador Medalla de Protector Coeli and U.S. Department of State Meritorious Honor Award. However, Odin is most proud of the five “Battle E” awards earned with his fellow shipmates in both surface and aviation commands.
