Commander James W. Duvall

Commander Duvall’s initial operational assignment was to the “Raptors” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 71 (HSM-71) in San Diego, California, where he deployed with Carrier Air Wing 9 onboard USS Kidd (DDG-100) and USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74). His second operational tour was with the “Saberhawks” of HSM-77 stationed in Atsugi, Japan. He deployed with Carrier Air Wing 5 onboard USS George Washington (CVN-73) and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76). He has flown more than 2,500 flight hours including 2,200 hours in the MH-60R Seahawk.

Ashore, he served as a flight instructor with the “Airwolves” of HSM-40 in Jacksonville, Florida. During his time ashore, he earned his Weapons and Tactics Instructor qualification at the Rotary Wing Weapons School in Fallon, Nevada.

In 2016, Commander Duvall transitioned to the Navy Reserves and assumed duties as a Science and Technology Liaison Officer with the Office of Naval Research (ONR). His research experience includes Unmanned and Autonomous Aerial Systems, and he has provided supervision and range safety for more than 2000 experimental aircraft sorties. He served as the the Executive Officer of ONR Science & Technology Unit 113 in San Jose, California, and most recently as the Commanding Officer of ONR Science & Technology Unit 206 in Atlanta, Georgia.

In June 2023, Commander Duvall was selected for a Mobilization to serve as the Executive Officer of Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti and arrived in November 2023.

Commander Duvall was selected as the 2015 Pilot of the Year for Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing Pacific. His personal awards include Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and several unit and campaign awards.
