About

U.S. Naval Support Activity Souda Bay, located on the island of Crete, Greece, is an operational ashore base that enables U.S., allied, and partner nation forces to be where they are needed when they are needed to ensure security and stability in the European, African and Central Command areas of responsibility. NSA Souda Bay is strategically located for power projection in the Eastern Mediterranean, supporting the Warfighter with access to an all-weather airfield, a deep-water pier facility and refueling and resupply services. Our higher headquarters is Commander, Navy Region Europe, Africa and Central Command, located in Naples, Italy.

NSA Souda Bay is home to approximately 1,000 people, including active duty military, U.S. civilian employees, local national employees, contractors, and family members, assigned to NSA Souda Bay or tenant commands. The base contributes an average of 35 million Euro to the local economy each fiscal year, including local national employee salaries, service and maintenance contracts, and local purchases.

NSA Souda Bay is located in the northwest section of the island of Crete, on the large, circular-shaped Akrotiri Peninsula. The easiest way to find NSA Souda Bay on a map is to find the Chania International Airport; the installation shares the airfield with both the civilian airport and with the Hellenic Air Force 115th Combat Wing. In fact, NSA Souda Bay is located completely within the Greek Air Force Base that is home to the 115th Combat Wing.

The Akrotiri Peninsula forms the northern part of the natural harbor of Souda Bay, and here you will find the Marathi NATO Pier Complex, which has the only deep-water pier in the Mediterranean Sea with berthing capability for aircraft carriers. This Complex is where our Port Operations and Harbor Security teams work.
